Çanakkale Wars

Naval and land Battles of Çanakkale, (Gallipoli Campaign or Dardanelles Campaign) took place at a narrow region known as Gallipoli Peninsula and Dardanelles at 1915. History also recorded the campaign as “War of the Gentlemen”. For us, the war is the last victory of Ottoman Empire, precursor of national independence war and the preface of modern republic of Turkey. The legendary struggle is the best example of our patriotism, unity and solidarity.

Moreover the Campaign is a story of heroism, self-sacrifice and bravery for both parties. The war showed the whole word how casualties deeply harm the people among the generations of nations participating the war.

We respectfully remember the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk after war at 1934;

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours… you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.

Electrical engineer Tevfik Rıza Bey, who was a reserve officer at the Goncasuyu Military Wireless Station sent letter diaries to his wife and told about the war. The diaries writen between 15 November 1914 and 18 February 1916 give us a new perspective on the Gallipoli Wars. Beside the historical knowledge the diaries carried the human dimensions of the war to the modern people.

In the diaries, Tevfik Rıza Bey explain the installation of the station and intelligence to interfare enemy communication as:

..We arrived at the Farm of Ali Bey 20kms close to Goncasuyu. Immadiately, we started to errect the antenna tower. We contacted our troop at Goncasuyu and started to receive enemy radio telegraphy. However we could not transmit yet.

Goncasuyu Tabyası KalıntılarıNotes from the Goncasuyu Wireless Station;

We are destroying the radio signals of enemy with a rapid and continious transmission from our radio. How do we know, the enemy plan to destruct our radio telegraphy shack. (9 December 1914)

Diaries shows us, Goncasuyu Wireless Station at the Kilitbahir Rumeli Bastion is the first case of electronic warfare in our war history.

Goncasuyu Military Wireless Station is located at Kilitbahir Gonca Hill of Gallipoli Peninsula. Goncasuyu Redoubt has a single room entered by a hallway, constructed from rubble-stone, bricks and Khorasan cement. Its barrel vault ceiling is constructed with thin slate material instead of bricks.
